Rain in Romania

Friday, June 6, 2008

At night I leave a window or two open to let in some fresh air.  And no Mom, no one can get in them.  I promise it's okay.... (I know how she thinks...)

I woke up this morning to a strange sound.  Sounded almost like a hissing noise...soft, but continuous, and I couldn't really tell where it was coming from.  Getting out of bed, I walked into the kitchen, where one of the windows was open.  The noise was coming from outside.  It took me a while to figure it out, because it was hard to see against the grey of the sky and the gray of the buildings, but it was rain.

I was a bit surprised.  This is the first time it has really rained some I started coming to Romania.  Guess I've been lucky, but I've usually been blessed with good weather.  But I think I was mainly surprised because this rain just "happened"

Been living in Oklahoma too long, I guess.  After all, where was the flashes of lightning that turn night into day for a few brief seconds?  The crashes of thunder that shake the windows with their low rumbling booms.  Here, the sky was completely grey and motionless, as if someone painted the blue sky a somber color and let the water pour.  No howling wind threatening the very existance of my roof, no boiling and churning clouds filling the sky, the weight of which you can almost feel as they pass overhead.  No fear of life and limb either.  It was just.....rain.

Looking out, I watched the calm and peaceful rain and it came down.  My window was open, but had no fear of water blowing inside.  I watched, and listend, and smelled the clean air as the water came down.

Peaceful and relaxing....a nice way to start the morning.
