Coat of Many Pockets

Tuesday, November 13, 2007

I have coat that has 31 pockets.  Or maybe that's 32 pockets.  I've lost count.  There are pockets all over, and even pockets in pockets.  Pockets, pockets everywhere!

When I tell people how many pockets are in my coat, they look at me as if I'm a bit crazy.  "How many?!?!" is what I usually hear when they've finally realized what I've said.  And then its.."Why would you have a coat with that many pockets??".   It's fairly predictable by now, these responses I get.

You may be asking yourself, as you read this, the exact same questions.  I wouldn't be surprised.

The primary reason I bought this coat (manufactured by Scottevest, sold by Magellan's) is for travel.  It seems that the airlines are making it harder for people to take stuff with them on vacation.  They lower the amount luggage weight you can take per bag (now 50 pounds) and allow only 2 bags.  Not too bad for traveling in the country, but if you are going out of the country, that can be a bit limiting.  Stricter rules for carryon luggage sizes and amounts (1 bag) are also being enforced.   As the rules get stricter, one of these days people will still get to travel, they just won't be able to take anything with them.  Buy your clothes when you get there.

If you've traveled by air lately, you probably know what I'm talking about...

One of the things you can still take on the plane and it doesn't count against you is a jacket.  Including a jacket with 32 pockets.

Perhaps you can see where this is going....

When I travel, I take the jacket with me.  And I put in the pockets as much stuff as possible.  On the last trip, I believe the jacket must have weight 50 pounds.  Though somewhat of a pain to carry through a busy, congested airport, it's worth the effort to get all that stuff on.

Last time I flew I had in my pockets the following:

  • 60GB MP3 player
  • Headphones
  • Glass case
  • Electronic Sudoku game
  • various candy packages
  • a package of homemade beef jerky
  • small flashlight
  • keys
  • wallet
  • a full size book
  • ticket holder (holds ticket, passport, credit cards, cash, itinerary)
  • cleaning wipes
  • combo comb/mirror/lint brush/shoe horn
  • Chapstick
  • Tide detergent pen
  • Others things I'm sure.... but now are forgotten

I must have looked really fat wearing that coat, but at least I got all the stuff I wanted packed for my trip.  Wasn't trying to impress anyone at the airport.

There's a pocket in back that supposedly can carry a laptop, but I drew the line at doing that....
