Commenting on Comments

Or should that be "Comments on Commenting"?  I don't get the idea.  If you haven't noticed, I have added the ability for people to post comments to my little musings.  Its been an ordeal to get this going, and it still isn't quite perfect.

I bought a little utility written in PHP (a web server based programming language) from a guy on the 'net.  He said it you just do a few steps, add some code, and there it goes.  And I'm sure he right...for most installation.  Unfortunately for me, things never seem to go easy.  Things weren't right from the start, and the PHP at my old hosting service was set up fairly strange.  This guy suggested I needed a new place to park my site, so I did that. And I have to admit, this site is better, I get more features and more disk storage space.  Bigger IS better!  Yet, things aren't quite perfect.....

If you use Internet Explorer, you need to adjust the settings so IE looks for a new page each time a web page is loaded.  Not doing this, and using cached files may have been important in the days of 14k modems, but not really today.  Why not sacrifice a second of speed to make sure you have the right page?  Not good to get a week old page and not even know it.

The firs thing to do is load the Internet Options.  In Internet Explorer 7, this is found in the Tools - Internet Options menu.  The screen to the left will load.  On the General tab, in the Browsing history section, press the Settings button.

You will be then taken to another screen to change some of these options.  Select the option that says "Every time I visit the web page".  This will actually make things work better in my humble opinion, and will always make sure that you have the latest and greatest updated web page.  That's a good thing!

Okay..this will make sure that you have the comments loaded as they are supposed to if you are on the right page, but sometimes the program doesn't always send you to the right spot. For some reason, you get extra text after the web page address, then the system thinks that this is a different page altogether so that the comments don't show. An example of this is below

Notice the text "?submit=Back+to+the+Page".  That shouldn't be there, and I'm not sure how to get rid of it.  But I have provided a click link before and after the comment section to move back to the real address page.  There is also a button provided should you feel the need to refresh the page, also before and after the comments section.  Hint: look below the end of the article, and there you will see them!

You have to sign up for posting comments.  Sorry to do it that way, but I wanted this to prevent spam, plus know who is actually commenting.  This may prevent some from leaving notes, but that's okay.  I don't want to spend half my time cleaning up inappropriate comments.

The colors of the comments, both the text and the background, can be changed.  Right now, the color picker does not work too well under Internet Explorer.  It does fine in Firefox.  Why?  I have no idea.  I am hoping that soon we (me and the guy who I bought it from - mostly him) can get all the kinks worked out of the system.

So, post your comments, I would love to see what you think.  Just be nice.  My kids read this.  So do my parents.  And my grandmother!  You don't want to offend my grandmother do you?  Thank you for understanding.
